Hi everyone, and welcome to Shadows and Light, a space where we explore the intricate relationship between life’s challenges and spiritual growth. I’m your host, The Empress, and today, we’re diving into a topic that touches millions, including myself, yet often remains misunderstood - depression.
Anyone who has lived through depression knows it is one of the most challenging experiences a person can face. It affects how we feel, think, and engage with life and ourselves. But beyond the pain, could there be an opportunity for growth, healing, and even spiritual awakening? That’s the question we’ll explore today.
A Personal Story of Darkness
I’ve experienced some serious bouts of depression in my life, but one stands out vividly: the time I lost my store. Before COVID, my husband and I poured our hearts into opening a café boutique. It wasn’t just a business; it was a haven for spirituality and healing, a sanctuary where like-minded souls could gather, share, and grow. We served food, sold tools, hosted workshops, and provided a massive metaphysical library for our community.
But then, the pandemic arrived.
The café was already struggling due to high rental costs and competitive challenges. When lockdowns became inevitable, consultants advised us to let go. Losing the café was devastating. It wasn’t just a business to me—it was my purpose. Without it, I felt completely lost.
The depression that followed was the darkest I’d ever experienced. I withdrew from everything and questioned my purpose, faith, and very existence. For months, I was haunted by one question: What’s the point of being here if I can’t help people?
A Moment of Clarity
One day, my husband suggested a micro-dose of psilocybin to ease my anxiety. Sceptical but desperate, I agreed. Hours later, lying in bed and staring at the void, my gaze fell on a tattoo I’d gotten years earlier: “Being is born from non-being,” a quote from the Tao. Suddenly, it clicked. I realized I’d been trapped in a cycle of rebuilding the same chaos after every loss. This time, I had to lose myself completely to embrace the enlightenment of being nothing at all.
That realization shifted everything. I emerged from the void with a deeper understanding of myself and my purpose.
Depression Through a Spiritual Lens
Medically, depression is a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest, often linked to imbalances in brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. Over 280 million people globally experience depression, according to the World Health Organization. While treatments like therapy and medication are vital, there’s an untapped dimension—the spiritual.
From a spiritual perspective, depression can be seen as a "dark night of the soul"—a period of intense inner reflection that leads to profound spiritual awakening. Like a seed buried in darkness, depression forces us to confront our innermost fears, unresolved wounds, and limiting beliefs. Over time, self-discovery emerges.
Three Ways Depression Can Foster Spiritual Growth
Self-Awareness: Depression brings us face-to-face with our shadows—the parts of ourselves we’ve suppressed or avoided. By acknowledging these challenging aspects, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves.
In my case, I confronted feelings of rejection from my family, especially my mother, who often reminded me that I was adopted and "not really part of the family." These painful reflections forced me to uncover hidden truths about my own strength and purpose.
Compassion: Experiencing deep pain can open our hearts to the suffering of others. It cultivates empathy and reminds us of our shared humanity.
Surrender: Moments of despair often lead to surrender—a willingness to listen to our higher selves. For me, surrender sounded like this: “Alright, you have me cornered. I’m listening. What do you need me to do?” This dialogue helped me reconnect with my purpose: to help others by sharing the wisdom gained from my own struggles.
Bridging Science and Spirituality
To navigate depression effectively, we can combine scientific and spiritual approaches:
Mindfulness Practices: Techniques like meditation and breathwork reduce stress and create space for spiritual connection.
Journaling: Writing helps map out emotional patterns and provides clarity.
Community: Seek support from mental health professionals, spiritual mentors, or group support. The best mentors are those who have walked the path themselves.
Acts of Service: Helping others fosters connection and gratitude, shifting focus outward. Twelve-step programs often emphasize this method.
Closing Thoughts
Depression is undeniably difficult, but it’s not without purpose. It can be an invitation to pause, reflect, and realign with your higher self. When it gets tough, try this: pause, laugh a bit (even if it feels forced), put your hands on your hips, and say, “Alright, you got my attention. Show me what I’m missing so I can dig my way out of this trench. I’m aware this is a test like all the rest.”
If you’re struggling, remember that it’s okay to seek help. Healing is not linear, but every step you take is progress. Journaling, reflection, and connection can all be powerful tools on this journey.
